rewiring the telephone line

12/11/2007: i started rewiring the telephone in the house about a month ago, and finally starting posting pictures. more to come...

we've hooked up a few lines, and the dsl filter...

12/16/2007: working to replace the only jack in the main room that was working when we moved in (and the only jack in the house) was a little bit annoying, and it wasn't because we didn't get a dial tone...

plaster mishap 01
cutting a hole in the plaster, didn't go so well
  plaster mishap 02
could've been worse i guess. fix it soon...

12/30/2007: it's amazing how projects can balloon...or maybe "explode into the near unthinkable" is a better way to explain it. let's just say that when you have a 100+ year old house it's probably not uncommon to find plaster and lathe walls that need redone. but, sometime in the past, someone apparently put in a dumwaiter and never patched the hole in the floor when it was taken out. it's amazing...

we startedby scraping out the cabinet
  dumwaiter piece
then, we decided to do the entire "shaft"/"pantry" and
found the dumwaiter pully below the shelf.

all i can do is shake my head...

and this is what's happened when i was tracing the phone wire that runs upstairs and disappears into the wall!

1/1/2008: and the hole has begun to close...

at least there's a place to step now, but it is kind of weird still. sure will be glad when i can't see the basement anymore when i'm standing there. <g>

1/5/2008: once the stuff had been added to the joists a 2x4 box had to be put in to raise the floor. why? the way the heating duct comes in won't allow the floor the be replaced at it's original level. it has to be raised about 4 inches, unless you wanna rerun some electrical cable, reroute a couple of water pipes to the water heater and then drop the duct that runs to the second floor.

we have a floor! (and can't see the basement unless we walk down the stairs!)

5/4/2008: (and time passed...) actually, after the problem in the panty was initially fixed i was able to start working on the phone system again. i just haven't updated anything here in awhile...

to keep the story short...
we've went from one phone line on the first floor, and one that i didn't know existed in the basement, to:
upstairs
   -bedroom: 1 phone line
-office: 2 phone lines (one unfiltered for dsl)
first floor
-main room: 2 phone lines (one unfiltered for dsl)
basement:
   test voice jack

each jack can handle 4 seperate phone lines and if need be, there's plenty of room to run entirely new lines! one of the best parts is that it is layed out in a star topology.

it's been pretty nice... <g>
