the hops in the backyard

jump to what's current...

8/15/2011: last year we planted, albeit late in the season, the hallertau rhizome that i got from freshops.com. well, it seems to have taken off quite well this year. and, a sterling planted on the other side of the yard has grown well too!

harvesting them the first time was a bit time consuming, but it went quickly with the two of us. i found a couple good links that seem to describe what a hop is like when it's ready. the hop growing primer and growing hops. now, we'll see how long drying takes:

maybe a week or three?

Update 9/14/2011: about a week later we built more drying racks, harvested the sterling hops and let everything dry. then, we bagged it up and used a cheap-o ziplock suction-pump-sealer to prepare them for storage. we'll see how it goes...
